Located in Carson City, an independent city and the capital of the US state of Nevada, named after the mountain man Kit Carson. Carson City is about 30 miles (50 km) south of Reno and originated as a stopover for California bound emigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, a silver strike in the mountains to the northeast.

The days of one-hundredth capacity crowds at the Ford Center for University of Evansville women's basketball games are nearing an end.

UE athletic director Mark Spencer said the Aces are 'penciling in' plans to move women's basketball contests to the on-campus Carson Center beginning with the 2017-18 season. The Carson Center — which will undergo a series of updates before and after the move — is already home to UE's volleyball matches and contains movable seating for up to 500 people.

'We just want to put them into the environment that feels like a home-court advantage,' Spencer said. 'And right now that's not the Ford Center.'

Evansville's average home attendance at women's basketball games this season is 523, but that doesn't reflect the actual number of fans in the seats. It counts all tickets sold, including multiple-sport packages that may go to customers more interested in other sports.

In reality, some Evansville games draw fewer than 100 fans to a venue that hosted more than 10,000 for a men's basketball game against Wichita State this season.

Spencer noted the rental agreement with the Ford Center is the same for men's and women's games.

'It benefits both of us,' he said of the eventual move to the Carson Center. 'The Ford Center loses money when we have women's games because we don't bring in any of the ancillary revenue — the parking and the concessions and things —but their hard costs stay the same.'

Spencer said the athletic department needs to 'figure out some financing' for the renovations to the Carson Center. The plans include doubling the seating capacity to about 1,000, resurfacing the floor or replacing it completely, upgrading the lighting, and installing new baskets, a videoboard and sideline video tables for marketing.

'That's hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of investment that's going to be on campus and going to be ours that will last for decades versus renting a turnkey facility,' Spencer said.

Spencer said the upgrades to the Carson Center will keep UE in compliance with Title IX, which mandates equal opportunity for men and women in college athletics.

'We will be moving toward a facility that is equitable (to the Ford Center),' he said. 'It's just smaller than the Ford Center with the same amenities.

'We're not disadvantaging the women. We're just trying to give them a venue that's more appropriate to their crowd size.'

If ticket sales exceed the Carson Center's capacity, UE would work with VenuWorks — the manager of the Ford Center — to move that game to the larger Downtown arena.
